Things Facebook Aren’t Telling You
Posted by Steven Fox
We live In the day and age where everyone uses facebook, and lets face it do we really know what data facebook has on us all ? Below is 19 different things that facebook either dont want you to know or tips on how to help you feel safer on facebook.
1. Want to know how much Facebook knows about you?
You can go onto “Account settings on the home screen and click “download a copy of your facebook data” this will show you a list of all the things facebook has tracked about you.
2.You may not want to share your updates and other personal information with the whole world.
However facebook sets the default setting as Public. In the point of view of facebook it is better for them if you share as much data as physically possible , and facebook assumes you are not going to bother changing your privacy settings.
3.You may not see every post from your friends, and only a fraction of your friends may see all your updates.
Facebook wants the users to stay on the site longer, therefore it shows them/ you the statuses and info that will keep you around the longest, so it moves up statuses that are shared and liked the most to the top of the list.
4.If you are signed in to Facebook it tracks you while you surf the Internet.
While you are on the internet you will notice the facebook symbol ,while you see this symbol on a website it means that facebook is notified that you have been on this website and facebook then logs this information.
5.If your posts are set to be Public, burglars can see your status updates and figure out when you’re not in town.
There has been cases where insurance companies have refused to pay out insurance claims because in effect the person claiming has posted that they are going away for a set amount of time and therefore advertised their house.
Posting big news like your engagement, the birth of a baby, or your acceptance to University ?
Facebook set preference on this type of status post, and uses something called natural language processing to make sure that this type of status sticks around till the next time that your friends log on .
It may work to your benefit that facebook to know a lot about you.
It may however work in your favour that facebook knows a lot about you , for example if you click the like button on one of your favourite companies facebook will track this and offer you coupons for this company.
Not seeing enough posts from friends you care about—and too many from those you don’t?
You can set your news feed up to most recent rather than top news. Then add the people you cant miss statuses to your favourites list and then unsubscribe from people who you don’t really want to hear from.
9.Facebook make money by selling ad space to companies that want to reach you.
They give facebook the demographics and the desired location , career and education level and they then put their adverts onto people that match any of the criteria pages.
Do you really want to make sure your friends see your important news (you’re having a garage sale, for example)?
You can pay a fee of between £5 and £8 to make sure that this particular post stays at the top of your friends news feeds for a set amount of time.
Lots of users hate Time-line, but it’s not going away any time soon.
This is because it is a much more effective way for people to share , it is more visually appealing and brands love it because it is a much better business platform.
You can limit your posts to Facebook friends who live in your city, those who went to your college, or those you work with.
You can also choose to allow everyone to view a post except your boss! Click the arrow in the lower right hand corner of a status update box and you will see the options.
Never leave your computer while you’re logged on to Facebook, especially if your co-workers have a sense of humour.
I’m sure everyone now knows what fraping is, trust me you do not want I love Justin Bieber as your status.
14. Be selective in choosing friends and Liking pages.
If you go around saying yes to everything you are going to see a lot of things in your news feed that you do not care about.
Hide from all your friends on Facebook Chat by going to the chat box and clicking Go Offline.
If for example you still want to appear online for everyone else you can just hide from one person , click on their name in the chat window , hit the cog icon that is in the top right and choose to go offline to “insert name of annoying person”.
Some information can’t be made private on Facebook.
Did you know that Your name, profile picture, cover picture, network, gender, and user name are always publicly available. There is literally no way to turn these things off!
17. Noticed fewer fans on your favorite Facebook pages?
That’s probably because the company has recently been cracking down on phony profiles created in mass by shady companies to boost a page’s Facebook popularity. In a recent filing, Facebook estimated that as many as 83 million of its profiles are fake, though some are duplicate pages set up by real people.
18. Here’s how to get the site to work faster and more efficiently:
Connect to a Wi-Fi network before using your phone to log on to Facebook.
Your interaction might be shown to your friends as an ad for that company.
It for me Is quite scary some of the things facebook do or don’t tell us, id rather they was much more transparent with their dealings but that is never going to happen so I hope this post have opened your eyes much more to the ways of facebook.
Please share this with all your facebook friends and share it on other social network platforms too!
